Program / September 2009 – July 2010

Our program will again have four major focuses:

  1. Franciscan Life and Work: Our work in his area will be two pronged:
  • Many of our evaluations from last year indicated that we wanted to place emphasis on St. Clare of Assisi and her values. We will reflect on her core message:    GAZE upon Christ; CONSIDER Christ; CONTEMPLATE AND IMITATE Christ.
  • We  have a resource from the community called Care for All of Creation.” The community is inviting sisters and companions to consider, reflect, pray and act regarding our environmental crisis of climate change by studying together the first two chapters of this book: “Universe Story” and “Global Warming.”   Francis called the whole of the universe “brother” and “sister”; his attitude toward all of creation was simple and direct. We are challenged to act on our brotherhood and sisterhood with all of creation for our time and in our world as followers of Francis and Clare.
  1. Sharing in the Life of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia: As part of each meeting we will have a “Sisters Corner” during which time we will do one of the following:
  • Invite some of the other sisters who live in the Portland area to come to a meeting and tell us about themselves and their ministry.
  • Pick a topic that both sisters and companions share in common and discuss it in small groups, e.g., how  we live Gospel lives in the context of our relationships and our work/ministries
  • Establish pen pal relationship with the Trenton, New Jersey companions
  1. Service to the Community
  • We will continue with our three service projects: Drexel Neumann Academy, Women’s Hearth, and Francis House.
  • There is also a desire to do something locally so we will work with Rose Haven as well.
  • We would also like to invite those who wish to actually go and visit these places. There will be an opportunity to volunteer for this.

Faith sharing will be the core of all we do and discuss since that is who we are as Companions in Faith.  With this as a priority for the year, we will be consistent about being sure to have at least 40 minutes for faith sharing at each meeting.

Our meetings will generally have the same structure as in the past with the addition of more time for faith sharing.

  1. The Franciscan Intellectual Tradition: God’s Extravagant Love: There was a desire expressed in our evaluations to participate in the workshop that Sisters Mary Jo and Celeste present on the Franciscan Intellectual Tradition. This would take place at the center over a weekend in April or May, beginning Friday night and continuing through Sunday at noon. We would invite our companions from Spokane, Klamath Falls, and Tacoma to join us and share our homes with those who come so they would have overnight accommodations.
