Following is an open letter written to President Obama and cosigned by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia’s leadership team and Advocacy for Justice and Peace Committee. The letter is in regards to the president’s decision on whether or not to send thousands of additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan and strongly urges the president to implement a policy that corresponds to the principles for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize which he accepted as a "call to action."

The congregation took a corporate stand against the war in 2003 stating, "We, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, believe that the United States of America cannot seek peace by waging war. We commit ourselves to stand with our fellow Americans in opposition of the war." This letter to the president is one way to reinforce our commitment to our corporate stand and to work toward implementing change.
