I am going on my 4th year as a CSA member and it is really the highlight of my summer. My weekly shares of produce and berries, the “goodies” as I call them, are amazing and abundant! It’s like having your own organic garden but with more variety and someone else to do all the work! The “goodies” you ask?—lettuce mix, heads of lettuce, arugula, and the sweetest spinach ever. I’ve gotten to try new veggies which I’ve come to really enjoy—bok choi, Asian greens, and swiss chard. My favorite crop, tomatoes, was in abundance last
year—beautiful, sweet, yellow heirlooms. At the height of the season, we were getting two quarts a week of the best cherry tomatoes—Sungolds!
Joining the CSA has helped me eat healthier and I was even able to freeze some veggies/sauces. What a treat to have roasted tomato sauce and ratatouille in the winter—Mmmmm! Pick-up days are really more of an event. You meet like-minded people and at the same time enjoy the solitude of being out in the “U-pick fields.” Some “U-pick items” include beans, hot peppers, herbs, raspberries (that actually taste like raspberries), blackberries and more—oh, and how could I forget . . . the flowers . . . a beautiful weekly bouquet.
You see, I could go on and on but the bounty is well worth the price and more. If I add it all up, I’m getting a lot more for my money. June to November = six months of the freshest “goodies,” new friends, and our fabulous farmers that can’t be beat—oh, did I mention the golden beets . . .
